It's been a couple days since I drove something I never thought I'd get to drive. And the experience has left me speechless, something I'm not prone to do as all of you can attest. My mind couldn't come up with any lovely descriptors or anything with rich prose. Rather, it just keeps coming up with dirtier expletives!
And fittingly so the 2014 Corvette C7 is an expletive car. The looks, expletive. The engine, major expletive. The entire package, holy shit this should be illegal. Sorry the expletives couldn't be held back any longer.
This little adventure of mine started out about a month and a half ago when my soon to be cousin-in-law told me that he had rented a brand new Stingray convertible for his wedding. I restrained myself from being a terrible person and asking him if I could drive it. Using an advanced form of non-terrible person telepathy called "speech"; I begged and pleaded with him to let me have the keys for a little bit! He knew I wrote about cars and said sure. (Jumping up and down in my head!)
When the big day came (big meaning the wedding for my cousin and the Corvette for me) the ceremony was wonderful, but I didn't see the car. The weather that weekend had been a bit cloudy and rainy so I wondered if he had still rented it. I wouldn't have blamed him if he hadn't. Nevertheless, as my wife and I strolled back to our car I caught a glimpse of something in the parking lot, a black C7 hardtop. I knew he had specifically stated that he went for a red convertible so I didn't get too excited just yet.
An hour later, we finally got to the reception, we said our hellos and congrats and again, I restrained myself from immediately asking about the car. (I wanted it to be the first thing out of my mouth.) After all the thank yous, I asked and my new cousin said he did rent it and pointed down the street to where the car was parked. A brand spanking new black C7 hardtop, looking as menacing as can be.
I actually waited a full 15 minutes to relax a bit and not bug the newlyweds. Then I couldn't take it any longer and asked if I could have a go. He threw me the keys and I calmly walked to car. (Meaning I ran like an idiot as fast as humanly possible.)
I opened up the door, slid myself into the buckets and pressed the starter button. (Here come the expletives.) The monstrous V8 roared into life like it was ready to attack innocent bystanders. Whereas a Ferrari V8 has more of a high-pitched shriek to it, this American V8 sounds like it's busting through the gates of hell to pillage its way through your damn Commie Town! When the engine starts, it sends shivers down my spine like it's coming for your soul.
I rolled it on down the street to where the wedding was so I could grab my wife and my camera gear. At this point, someone yelled out, "do a burnout!" I looked over to the new groom and he gave me the thumbs up! Therefore, I gave my tech savvy brother my camera and told him to shoot a video! This did not work.
I ripped a great burnout, and the only video I have is blurry and silent. GREAT!
Apart from my technical difficulties, sadly, this Corvette wasn't the 7-speed manual, but rather the 6-speed auto. Now I know that there has been a lot of bad press about this transmission, but I think they got their reviews all wrong. This 6-speed coupled with this "oh-shit" engine, this is how Chevy describes it, are actually perfect mates.
The engine is so ferocious that you need a little pause in the transmission so that you can brace yourself once again before the savagery of the next shift. It was these pauses that I absolutely loved because you knew what was about to hit you!
And this car is most definitely a savage. The speed at which you get to very, very illegal speeds boggles your mind. You just plant your foot and you are easily doing 100-140mph, "allegedly."
( This is me giggling like an idiot)
During my limited time, I also persuaded my dad to hop into the car. His experience with cars is pretty limited. He has a BMW Z3, which he absolutely loves, but that is pretty much his knowledge base on cars and speed. While waiting for a gap in traffic I asked him "what is the fastest car he has ever been in?" He started by saying the Z, and then quickly remembered he had once gotten a ride in a C5 Vette. I knew at that moment he was in for a trip. When I got the gap I needed, I pulled out and said, "just wait" and punched it. The look on his face was priceless. It was a mixture of terror, g-force, and ultimate enjoyment! With this, I was laughing hysterically! After I got off the gas he turned and looked at me and said, "Yeah, now that was fast!"
This car in the strictest sense is a beast, but it remains a beast you could live with daily. The suspension is comfortable even in track mode, which I never took off. The seats are super comfortable and are great at keeping you in place while let's just say going around a turn vigorously.
My only real gripe and realistically it would be more of an adjustment, would be for Chevy to lower the seats a bit more because at 6'4", it's a tight fit. In addition, the steering would benefit from a bit more weight. It wasn't numb by any means, but it could use a little more resistance built in. However, while actually driving this car the steering is beyond accurate, almost telepathic.
Like the Camaro article that you all " !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ", this car showed me what American cars could be. Over the course of my life, I have had the opportunity to drive many amazing cars, but this one has made the very top of my list. This my friends was my first Vette, and for it to be this model, I was awestruck.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
I can't find better words than "world beater" and "holy crap, holy crap, holy crap" when talking about this car. It's hard to see how any other sports car could live up to this. If measured only by the number of smiles alone, it should cost ten times what it does. Chevy knocked it out of the park with this car, and I can't wait to see what they do with the bonkers Z06!
Skip to around 745 for a better burnout with sound!
You can find me here on !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! too!
Here are a few more pictures, I took a lot.

Nothing, and I repeat nothing beats the sound of a GM small-block in my book. Absolutely nothing.

Damn you, rental company, for catering to the 95%...

I know its a rental but.... boo.

everyone's gonna be butthurt about being auto, but if I was a rental agency I sure as hell wouldn't be handing keys to manual cars just so I can get a nice car back with flambé'd clutch and an angry gearbox from flatfoot shifting
![]() 06/12/2014 at 10:23 |

Imagine the number of clutches they would have to replace. They'd honestly probably get two rentals out of one clutch, considering how people drive rental Hyundai accents

luckyyyyy! If in the 6 speed auto you still felt the rush of the power, the 7 speed must be bonkers.

Enjoy a race tuned one then. (Recommend headphones with the sound turned way up). Then follow this with a video of a McLaren M8C for the hellish cacophony that is a race tuned Big Block Chevrolet.

I love it when designers use/hide emblems in creative ways. This also reminds me of the dash trim plate of a 55 chevy. It looks like mesh from far away but the holes are little bowties.

They put the logo all over the place on the C7. It's even in the headlights.

As much as I love these things, I tried to sit in one couple weeks ago. And I emphasize "tried", because I didn't even come close to fitting. I hate that crap. No, it's not always nice to be tall.

I think with the competition seats, it would have been way roomier. And if all else fails, rip em out and put in a nice set of Recaro's.

I think most of the journalists that have had access to PDK and DCT are probably a bit jaded with the speed of this trans. But if you just sit back and enjoy it, the relative slowness of the trans makes it way more fun. You just get this split second pause where you think you will be alright, then BAM you're slammed back into the seat!

I've found the traditional small-block Chevy to sound a good deal different from the LS engines. I thought the 1998-2002 Camaro/Firebird to typically sound pretty awful opened up (but decent stock). The Corvette from that era isn't bad though. The 6.0 GTO sounded fantastic with a Magnaflow setup (what I had on mine). I think it was from the F-Body not having a true dual setup, while the Corvette and GTO did.
But I agree, I do love the sound of a SBC. This is my 55 with an 11:1 small block with longtube headers and dumped 40 series Flowmasters.

Sounds like a sport bike. Nope. V8 still wins.
![]() 06/12/2014 at 15:05 |
|
I own a Mutang and I think the Vette sounds better, but I don't think there's a "loser" in the contest, except for Europe, who can't build anything as awesome. AMGs sound like farts in a tub compared to an SBC.

In my aural experience, only one can beat it, and that's the sound of a carb'd Ferrari V12.

It's about time Chevrolet made Corvette that was actually an all-round competent car, instead of just a performance machine.

Your review had me smiling all the way through. The stuff about having to wait to get the keys from your brother and your impatience...hilarious—and I felt like if I were in your shoes I would be feeling and acting the EXACT SAME WAY. Pretty much. It's such a shame, there are so many awesome cars I'll never be able to drive. Mini's, old Cobras, Ferraris, Lotuses, etc.

Oh I am totally a child when it comes to cars. I've been not so lightly hinting to my uncle that I really need to try out his Viper and NSX for the past year. If I get to, I will fulfill two childhood dreams, I might actually faint if he gives me the keys. And there is no reason he won't, he let me drive his brand new Tesla which is way more money than those two!

If I ever want to build a kit cobra, I'll have to lengthen it in the cabin to have any shot. I'm surprised I fit in my 04 Mustang as well as I do. It's no 50's cadillac in size, but I'm not completely squeezed in.
![]() 06/12/2014 at 15:40 |

I thought I would have that same problem in my FR-S, but I have loads of room. Even with my forward racing seat position. Some cars have loads of room that you would never expect. Then there are others you would think have lots of room but don't, the Jag XJR for instance.

I was wondering if you can help me out.
I own an MK4 R32, I want to get an American muscle car next year. My three choices are 2015 Vette, Mustang GT350/500 or the Challenger. And I am going to be sacrilegious I want to get the Vette or Challenger in auto. Been using manual for over 9 years now I don't dislike manuals I feel that I am getting older and just want to simplify my driving. There is a strong possibility that I will go manual but I don't know how I will feel by next year.
My heart says Vette but my gut wants a Challenger the Mustang well if I can't make up my mind between the Vette or Challenger I will pony up instead. So I am asking around for peoples unbiased opinion on all three cars from people who own or have driven all three. I know that the 2015 Mustang/Challenger are not out yet it's okay info on the current ones is fine.
![]() 06/12/2014 at 15:44 |

I would be spraying all kinds of expletives too if I was forced to drive an automatic "sports car".
![]() 06/12/2014 at 15:48 |

Personally, I will never get another auto unless it's like a McLaren or something that only comes in that. But this box wasn't bad!
![]() 06/12/2014 at 15:49 |

I bet. Last Vette I reviewed was a 2012 GS convertible, which I had for a week two years ago. I kept getting on & off the highway so I could floor it on the onramp & giggle like the village idiot. Fun car.
![]() 06/12/2014 at 15:52 |

Challenger feels way too soft and clunky, the refreshed interior was very much needed. The seats aren't that comfortable for being a big chunky car.
The Mustang is fun. That 5.0 Coyote engine is a beast. A whole load of torque to propel you very quickly forward. The handling isn't especially good, but the IRS in the new one should sort that out pretty quickly if they did it right, and I have no doubt they did.
The Corvette is a blast. It's responsive, comfortable and stupidly quick. For the money I would probably get the Vette with Magnetic ride.
So my picks would got Vette, Mustang, CTS-V, any of the AMG Mercs, then the Challenger. I just can't get away from how chunky the doors and A pillars make this car.

I drove an FRS and was quite surprised that a. I Fit, and b. I was able to actually drive it. I didn't find it particularly comfortable, but that's just me.

It's honestly up to you, don't let any of us bully you around for auto or stick. Cars can be fun with both if you use them that way. Personally, I like a stick. But I'm also a bit of a control freak. But the paddles on the Vette are a lot of fun and work quite well. I haven't tried the Challenger or the Mustang with a auto box though, those were both stick, so I wouldn't be able to comment on those.

I know the GT 350/500 are manuals only, it's that I have had a manual for a while now and I am in my forties now I think I might be getting burnt out on manuals.
Plus all my friends are assholes, all that time I owned a manual nobody ever wanted to learn how to use one, I always wanted to teach someone how to use a manual but nobody cared enough to learn so sad.

My friend got a brand new Mustang a year or two ago, in stick, without knowing actually how to drive it. For the longest time he assured me that it was terrible and that it wouldn't do a burnout. So that weekend I took him out, showed him how to actually drive it, and promptly turned the tires into smoke. He wanted to learn, but he didn't want to be taught. It's the same problem my wife has right now.

I flew down to Savanna Georgia in 06, that is where I bought my car I live in NYC. The guy at the dealerships asked "you do know how to drive stick right". I told him I learned in a 930 turbo and an e39 M5 but as far as owning a manual never. So he shows me how to engage the reverse VW has a weird way of putting it in reverse.
Then I jumped in and he made sure I can reverse and that I could get it into first and then second. After that he wished me luck and I was on my way. I only put eight thousand miles on the clutch before it went the current one has 60K under the belt. So I did learn how to use one eventually.

I bought my 2014 3LT Stingray about 2 months ago and I am honestly still on the fence about the car (please dont attack me) :)
The car sounds amazing but I have the 7 speed manual and I just cannot jive with the transmission. Its a bit rough and leaves some things to be desired, especially first gear.
Interior is amazing but seats suck hot ass. I have been on a few over 2 hour drives and it just kills my back. The power of car is amazing, but almost begs you to have repeated court dates. I mean you can be like "ok 55mph.... got it... (look down) 97mph... dammit!!!"
But once you get past all that the car is bonkers... looks are 10/10 and its like cat nip for old dudes at gas stations. I cant fill up without a ton of guys migrating to me asking the same question "do you like it?" :)
![]() 06/12/2014 at 16:47 |

I had the opportunity to drive the new Stingray several months ago at Cal Speedway (oval and infield) through an arrive and drive program. It was a fantastic experience. We were able to try all of the driving modes, first on a slalom course, then a short road course (coned off in the infield) and finally on the full track. In retrospect I wish I had tried the auto, but opted for the manual for every session. (It was like going to the kart track, and running to get your favorite kart before someone else does.) I was not a big fan of American cars, but this car changed my mind...

Serious inquiry that I am too lazy to scroll down to look for (and because this isn't a forum that mandates searching before asking hehe)—Is the HUD actually crooked? To me, it is not level...with anything in the images of it. Is it just the camera, or did you find that it was quite awkward. Looking at it puts my eyes through strain they can't handle.

I believe the 2015 will have the option to put the Z06 8spd auto in a regular Vette. Won't that be nice if it comes to pass.

I bought a new Stingray about 3 months back (with the 7 speed manual) and I must say, that out of every car I have ever owned, that one, by far is my favorite. It puts a smile on my face every time I drive it. My only problem I have with it, is that my girlfriend drives it more than I do, lol.

Just had a hearing test, thanks for checking. LFA still sounds like a sport bike. It's not BAD, just not better than a domestic V8 to my ears.
